UESCA Almost Never Existed – Here’s Why!

Whether it be clicking on the ‘Register Now’ button for a half-marathon in July, or starting a coaching business, it’s really easy to overthink things and not take action. There are a million reasons for this type of thinking and behavior. I get it…  I was there!

I often get asked how and why I started UESCA. As I discuss in the video on our homepage, the catalyst for starting UESCA was to elevate the standard of endurance sports education. That’s the short, concise and honest answer. However, the question as to what made me take action to actually start it in the first place is a whole other story…

Despite UESCA not starting (soft launch) until 2015, the idea of UESCA had been rolling around in my head since around 2000. As you can see, it took me quite a few years to take action! Here’s the short story behind getting my act in gear!

I had gone on a date with a girl named Amy in 2000 and I remember we got into a discussion about what we wanted to do with our lives. She had just finished her Masters at Columbia and was studying for the MCAT’s to get into medical school. At the time, I was working in the fitness industry and while I was happy doing that, I told her that I had this idea of starting a certification company for endurance sport coaches.

Fast forward about 13 years later, I had a conversation with a mutual friend of Amy and I asked her if she still keeps in touch with Amy and what she is doing. “Oh, she’s an Endocrinologist.”

While I progressed in my fitness career to a degree, I was largely still working in the same environment and doing a lot of the same things that I was doing when I went on that date all those years ago. Conversely, Amy had applied to medical school, got accepted, graduated medical school, completed her residency, completed her fellowship and was now a practicing Endocrinologist.

The exact feelings that came over me when my friend told me this were many, but at the end of the day, the feeling that was by far the most abundant was that I was sick of my own sh#t! I had to make a change!

That very night I sat down and started to create an outline for course material that would eventually become the UESCA Triathlon Coach Certification

The process of creating the content for the certification ranged from fun to downright exhausting and frustrating. However, each time I got into a funk and felt like throwing in the towel, I reminded myself that what I was going through likely didn’t even compare to what Amy went through during medical school. Yet, she persevered and so would I.

There will always be things that get in the way of starting, progressing or completing a goal of yours. However, often the biggest thing getting in your way is YOU!

Whether it be starting a coaching business or training for that big race – put your excuses aside, realize there is never the ‘perfect time’ to get started, imagine what your life will look like once you accomplish your goal(s) … and dig in! You got this!!
